PORTLAND, Ore. - Borders Group Inc. shares soared more than 25 percent Wednesday after it posted better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter. But analysts remained leery, saying that tough competition and a weak economy continue to pose big challenges for the bookseller.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Borders Group Inc. shares soared more than 25 percent Wednesday after it posted better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter. But analysts remained leery, saying that tough competition and a weak economy continue to pose big challenges for the bookseller.

 

The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet" (Norton. 194 pages, $23.95), By Neil deGrasse Tyson: If there is an advocacy group for little guys in the universe, it must have been asleep on Aug. 24, 2006. On that fateful day, the International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto to a "dwarf planet," tossing it out of the nine-member family of planets in the solar system. The reason? It did not meet one of the new, IAU criteria that a full-fledged planet must have an orbit clear of celestial debris. Pluto's, unfortunately, is cluttered with such debris.

Stephen King's agent pleased with e-book debut

It's not the sensation of his first effort, but Stephen King's latest e-adventure is another best-seller
King's agent, Ralph Vicinanza, said Tuesday that downloads of King's novella UR, available only as an e-book and released to coincide with the launch of Amazon's upgraded Kindle reader, have reached "five figures" after barely three weeks on the market.
Random House buys `Moosewood Cookbook' publisher

NEW YORK – Random House Inc., which recently underwent a major consolidation, is expanding again.

The publisher announced Monday that it acquired Ten Speed Press, which specializes in cookbooks, business and spiritual works, including such favorites as "The Moosewood Cookbook" and "What Color is Your Parachute?" the million-selling job-hunting guide series.

"This is a real opportunity for us to further grow our business ..." Random House CEO Markus Dohle said in a statement.

Random House spokesman Stuart Applebaum said that "under Mr. Dohle, Random House is very open to discussion about potential acquisitions which would be a good fit with our current portfolio of imprints wordwide."
